A 5-minute walk from the AtheVillas settlement Halaikia beach, is ideal for exploring with a mask due to the many caves it contains. North-west of the village in a small cove is Kato Mezapos beach which is famous for its crystal clear waters and the view towards Maini Castle. On the way to the beach it is worth making a stop at the Sassari pirate tower which you can spot next to it. The picturesque port of Kourkos which is accessible by stairs is another amazing choice for a visitor who wants to enjoy the turquoise waters of Mezapos.
Sights near Mezapos
At a close distance of 8 kilometers from Mezapos, there is the coastal settlement of Gerolimenas, whose name comes from ancient Greece as a “sacred port”. Gerolimenas was an important port in ancient Greece and one of the strongholds of Mani’s pirates during the Turkish occupation. At a distance of about 23 kilometers from Mezapos, the village of Vathia stands out with its abandoned towers, examples of the Maniatic architectural tradition. Vathia “Forgotten by Time” is an impressive attraction of Mesa Mani and rightly has the title of the most photographed settlement of Mani. Also, about 13 kilometers from Mezapos are the caves of Diros, one of the top caving sites in the world. These caves were created by an underground river and offer an imposing atmosphere with unique colors and shapes that almost touch perfection. Guided tours of the caves of Diros take place in small boats with the help of expert guides, who provide information on the geology, history and archeology of the place during the tour. Porto Kagio is a quiet village whose name comes from the Venetian Porto Quaglio and the French Port des Cailles (Port of the Quails). Porto Kagio was the base of the pirate fleet of Lambros Katsonis, where it finally disappeared. During the Second World War, it was the location from which a significant number of British soldiers escaped to Egypt.
At 19 kilometers outside of Mezapos is Areopolis, the heart of Mani, an ideal place to enjoy traditional food combined with an evening excursion, due to the excellent cocktails offered by the local shops. For lovers of fresh fish, the village of Limeni, located near Areopoli, is the right place. If you are lucky, you can see or even swim next to turtles on the beach of Limeni.
